The science has been clear for decades that smoking is entirely bad for your health and that stopping smoking can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for your body. Smoking is so dangerous and addictive that the Federal government sets limits as to when tobacco companies can air commercials and towards whom they can design their marketing.

Nowadays, though, the marketing emphasis has changed from smoking to vaping. But, is vaping safe, and can it be a suitable replacement for smokers who are trying to be healthier while still engaging in the same mechanics as smoking? A lot of the science is yet to be decided, but there are some things we do know which can help guide your choice.

What is Vaping?

Vaping is so named because you inhale a vapor-like substance through the use of a vaporizer or e-cigarette. However, vaping is a bit of a misnomer, as while the gas you inhale resembles water vapor, it includes many other chemicals, including nicotine, that make it distinctively something else.

The battery in a vaporizer helps power a heating element, which then gently raises the temperature on the material you intend to inhale, whether it be plant material, like tobacco or cannabis, or an e-liquid. So, when you use a vape, you’re using a device that contains multiple parts, all designed to deliver a less harsh gas, when compared to standard smoking, for you to breathe in.

Vaporizers come in many shapes, from larger ones with many customizable features, like the ability to set a specific temperature for the heating element to reach, to smaller devices that closely resemble the shape and look of a typical cigarette.

Vaping vs. Smoking

When you smoke a cigarette, you’re applying a direct flame to create a combustive reaction that results in an inhalable smoke. The smoke from typical tobacco cigarettes contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including many that are potentially hazardous. Over time, the inhalation of these chemicals can cause any number of health issues, including cancer.

One of the most toxic elements of cigarettes is nicotine. Nicotine inhalation comes with a whole cadre of potential health issues, including increasing the chance of addiction, raising your blood pressure, and bumping up your heart rate. Smokers who experience a heart attack often do so, in part, because of the presence of nicotine in their bloodstream.

Further Research is Still Needed

A lot of the conditions that cause cigarettes are still present in vaporizers. One of the benefits of vaping is you get to choose the e-liquid that’s best for you based on many parameters, including the tobacco concentration level. By adjusting the concentration levels, you may be able to stave off some of the negative consequences of tobacco. But, it’s still essential to know that unless the concentration level is at zero, your e-liquid most likely still contains nicotine, which can cause addiction and a myriad of other potential health issues.

Also, while science seems to point to e-liquids containing fewer toxic substances than regular cigarettes, no one’s quite sure exactly how many poisonous materials e-liquids include. Without additional research into e-liquid ingredients, it’s hard to state for sure whether vaping is healthier than traditional smoking.
